We've been checking craigslist for a while to find a good 2002 as a project car; maybe even making an M2 (dreams are good, right?) and found this posted today:
http://newhaven.craigslist.org/cto/4406244960…
It's a lengthy description of the car; tl;dr summary : " If you go for a hard 1-2 shift it'll grind, so don't do that. First is practically a crawler gear anyway, I only use it in parking lots and to get it going. Otherwise, shifts are smooth."
There isn't a price listed, and the seller appears to be willing to accept trades for other old project cars. The kicker with that is this part of the description:
Got bumped in the rear late fall of last year, haven't driven it other than moving it around the house since. Tails look serviceable, but the trunk won't close properly and the exterior sheet metal is pretty bad.
With no pictures of the damage it's hard to know how bad it is. What say you Oppo; is it worth a second look?

Awesome pictures also! They don't really capture the car nicely for sale though in my eyes.

None of the pictures show any damage....which is kind of confusing because the description of the damage isn't clear how major it is.

Sounds like the seller's a car guy (always a plus) but an impact hard enough to make the trunk unable to close on an old and frail lady like this is a little scary re: condition of the frame. Then again, while that might not be ideal for M2 dreams it might still be a good putter-er. I don't know, I only drive slow so it wouldn't necessarily be a deal breaker for me.
No price is frustrating though, especially when asks on these things ranges A LOT.
Last thought; out-of-date pictures can be sort of a red flag too especially with that "the sheet metal's pretty bad" line.
Are you far away from this guy?

Based in NJ; so not that close. The no price is frustrating, and the disconnect between getting rid of one project and trading for another makes one think the damage could be more than cosmetic.

O_O That looks like guard rail damage from a spin out. Is that the same car?

Looks like Braking Bad found the current owner on here... if you're all the way in NJ definitely get up-to-date pics before making the hike.

Are the belting trim and black interior in good shape? I'll give him however much those are worth, plus a case of whatever beer he likes.

It's pretty easy to fix or replace everything in a simple older car like that... except the body. So... I wouldn't go for it.

Hmmm, if that's the same car they haven't posted since they posted that.

It's the same car. The last picture in the Craigslist add is the same as the one on the Oppo post. He hasn't been around for a while but I think he's part of the bunch that went to google+ with 5.0 or 6.0 or whatever.

The 2002 is a unibody car, so there isn't a frame to speak of. If the doors close then I'd be willing to bet it's ok from the boot forwards.
Saying that, if it's old photos I'd be willing to bet that water's got in through the bent bits and started rusting out the floor along with the boot itself.
Should be fixable if you can find a 2002 with a rusted out front end and transplant the whole thing, but not for the faint-hearted.

Go for it, you won't regret it. Just change the wheels. When it's cold, mine is almost impossible to get to second. It's just the way they are.

That was my tip-off as well. I think they were an e30 option wheel that I've seen on 2002s a few times.

Somebody linked me to this post. TL;DR I thought I put a pic of the damage up, there's one on there now and I've texted a few to interested parties. It's fixable from what I've seen, not for the faint of heart but that's why I don't really know where to price it. Trunk closes now, turns out the latch was just barely out of alignment.
If anybody's actually interested I can answer any questions.

Nice, just saw the newly linked photo and it doesn't look as terrible as one would think from the description. Thanks for that. Was it from an accident? Kind of surprising a rear end collision wouldn't have been fixed by the person hitting you since those are one of the easiest cut and dry insurance claims.
Has anything leaked in to the trunk since it's been sitting? Rust would be a huge fear at this point if things were out of whack.

Well, Luck of the Irish. Happened one night coming from a friend's house, guy took off and the only description I could give the cop was "White 00s Silverado" they never caught him. Classic insurance goes by your "stated value" and I did a rough estimate on the damage, it'd cost too much for a shop to do. I could do it myself for the money easily though.
Nope, trunk was sealed for the winter properly and it was parked in a garage. Not temperature-controlled or anything but nice and dry.

Oh, God yeah, not two weeks after I posted it. My mechanic buddy hooked me up with a guy who restores these. Didn't get exactly what I wanted, but it's out of the driveway.
